K, so I’m a Diet Dr. Pepper junkie. LOVE me some Mom Beer. When I came across this cute craft from The Idea Room to upcycle my empty cans into coasters, I was all over it. Cuz what else am I supposed to put my Diet DP on but an awesome Diet DP coaster?! And the the cool thing about this craft is that it can be tailored to your favorite drink…pretty much any aluminum can can be turned into a coaster. Here’s how: Supplies: *aluminum cans *individual tiles (I grabbed mine at Lowe’s for about 15 cents each) *tin snips *adhesive like E-6000 *polyurethane *foam brush *felt *hot glue Instructions: *Rinse your cans and start making an aluminum can collection. (My brother-in-law teased me that my DP cans were looking like stacked cans in a frat house!) *When you have enough cans, use the tin snips to cut the can. I started at the UPC code and cut up the side. Using the rounded part as a guide helped me cut the top and bottom. (Use gloves with your tin snips to protect your hands cuz the metal can be sharp!)
*Time to glue! I used E-6000 for my adhesive and put it on both the tile and can.
*I tried using this outdoor adhesive, but OH GOSH no!
After I added the polyurethane, the adhesive refused to stick. Grr. ;/ So, make sure you use a strong adhesive like E-6000.
*Wipe off any excess glue with a wet paper towel or rag and allow the coasters to dry completely. I added heavy cans to the top to help weigh them down. *Next, add a couple of coats of polyurethane to protect the coasters and keep the edges from coming up and poking people.
*The last step is to hot glue a square of felt to the back to keep the coaster from scratching your table or other surfaces.
Now you have some super cute coasters made out of your favorite drink!!
And the coolest part is the price…just a few cents per coaster using inexpensive tile and cans from your recycle bin. LOVE that price! 🙂
ENJOY!
