Did you know that we got a dog? He hasn’t made his debut on the blog yet…so I guess here it is!! Meet Gage!
Now, a little back story on how we came to get this doggy of mine. You see, my kids have been BEGGING for a dog for years. For a long time we rented a home that did not allow for pets, so it was an easy and quick no every time the thought was brought up. But once we moved into our house, and they started asking again, I had to start getting creative with my answers. It wasn’t until last Summer that I actually thought about it.
Sean and I got to attend the Warrior Games. Haven’t heard of it before? That’s ok….we hadn’t either until my brother made the team. It was one of the most amazing weeks of my life. You see, it’s a whole event full of Olympic type competitions. You have swim, basketball, volleyball, track & field, cycling, and so much more. But all of the athletes are injured or sick veterans. So we got to watch men with no arms swim across the pool. Women with no legs bike for miles, and blind people throw shotput. There were so many times that I found myself tearing up thinking “I can’t even swim that far, and I have 2 arms and 2 legs”. But the thing that stuck out the most to me was all of the amazing service dogs
The dogs were all over the competitions, taking care of their people! This dog in the picture above would run back and forth from side to side of the pool while her person was in the water. It was the biggest celebration when they were reunited after the race. You see, her owner is a double amputee, and she goes everywhere….and I mean EVERYWHERE her owner goes. So it was hard for her to be separated during competition time.
Here she is being cooled in any way possible after she overheated (mid July in Chicago!) during the track and field competition. They tried wet towels and finally decided to just use a trash can full of cool water. She loved every second of it, and the attention she got.
After being around all of these incredible dogs for a week, my heart quickly got softened toward the idea of having that furry companion in our home. It took a few months before I finally found the perfect dog for our family, and I got to surprise our kids when they got home from school. They didn’t have the slightest clue he was coming.
Since getting him, he’s become the new spoiled member of the family. Not just because he takes all my attention, wakes us up early and sometimes in the middle of the night, and uses everything as a chew toy. But because we all LOVE HIM TO PIECES! So of course we are the ones who spoil him and get him the best of the best. Dang spoiled dog!
