DIY Valentine gifts for your Sweetheart

Sean and I have tried really hard, since we have been together, to not spend a whole lot of money on gifts for one another. As I am a whole lot better at crafting than him, I’ve been more successful!!
I thought that I would share my Valentine’s Day gifts from the last 4 years (Wow, we’ve been together that long!)
Year 1 – “14 reasons why I love you”
I started this on the 1st day of Feb. and had one scrapbook page for each reason. That way he could get one page a day and they would all come together in a book on V-day.
I included pictures from the time we were dating (we weren’t married our first V-day together). I love to have pictures involved, because you never know how easy you will forget the memories.

Reason #3 – You come to my clogging competitions and performances

Reason #5 – You listen to country music

Reason #11 – You are passionate about your friends and family

Reason #7 – You’re a kid at heart

Reason #10 – You’re sentimental

We still pull the book out all the time and look back on it. Maybe I should have made it more of a sturdy book, because it is really suffering over time!
Year 2 – “I think of YOU when I hear…”
I made a mixed CD (yes, major Jr High cliche – I know!) of all the songs that make me think of Sean. I then gave him a whole book of notes as to why I think of him when I hear each song.
During this time, Sean was out of town for work so I gave this to him before he left and had him listen to one song a night. The first night he listened to song #1 only, and read the first note. The next night he listened to song #2, and so on! It was a great way for me to be with him while he was away, as well as for him to know all the really RANDOM reasons that I think of him!
I can’t believe I’m sharing my corney notes, but here’s note #1-
“Don’t Blink” – Kenny Chesney
The first time I heard this song, I thought of how fast the time has past since you and I started dating. It seems like yesterday we were at CPK at Gateway and I was eyeing you the whole time we were there. Flirting with you in the car and on the couch at Joe’s house…but I didn’t ever have to say a word.
I had a slurpee the other day and it instantly took me back to our first date when you INSISTED you buy me something to eat, but I wasn’t hungry. So instead we went to 7-eleven and got slurpees.
Time flys when you are in love and I can only imagine how fast it’s going to go for the rest of our lives. I love you and hope it isn’t too fast that we can’t slow down to enjoy one another’s company.
Year #3 – “I don’t care who knows ‘I Love You'”
This year, I tortured a friend and drug her all around the city. I made her go to so many different places just to take a picture of me holding a huge sign that said “I love you” on it.
We went to all of the significant areas that we said “I love you”.
  • The first place Sean said “I love you” to me
  • The first place I said “I love you” to Sean (No, these two weren’t at the same time)
  • We also took one from atop a mountain (really just up a hill)
  • and from the middle of a city street
I made a collage of all the pictures and framed it for him.
Unfortunately I can’t find it (packed somewhere fromt he move) but it had a saying that talked about:
from the first time I heard it, and the first time I said it, I knew I wanted the whole world to know that I loved him. I’d shout it from the mountains or the middle of a busy city street. Just so everyone knew that I loved him!
Year 4 – “Tell me a story”
This year I’m got my inspiration from K Mckay Designs. She shared an amazing “Tell me a story” box on Studio 5 a while back, and I instantly knew that it would be this year’s V-day gift!
Ever since Sean and I were dating, whenever there was an awkward pause, we would say “tell me a story” and then take turns telling stories from when we were children. I am certain this project is going to be PERFECT. And hopefully something that we will build on for many years to come.
(I haven’t finished yet, so not many pictures to share)
Start off with a recipe box and then cover with paper, embelishments, etc.
I made this print that I will put on the front of the box
Then fill the box with recipe cards and a section marker with every family member’s name.
Then in each section you can put great stories of each family member!
We will continue to put stories in, as well as pull them out to read to one another!
Here’s Kristine Mckay on Studio 5. The “Tell me a story” box is about 6 1/2 minutes in.

What are you doing for your Sweetheart this year?
