This weekend we tackled a project that has been on the “to do” list since we moved into this house 3 1/2 years ago; the master bathroom. When we first looked at the house of course we didn’t see all the small details and one of which was all of the water stains on the walls in the bathroom.

Water drip stains on paint

The previous owners didn’t ever use the fan when showering (this is what we are assuming) so the steam caused huge water drip stains. Plus…the walls were painted in flat paint. So that’s just not great in the first place.

Also, we really did not love the greenish brown color they choose to paint the bathroom.

Needless to say, this project has been a long time coming. And I am now kicking myself for not doing it earlier. I maybe just sat and lingered a little longer than usual after getting ready this morning just to bask in the glory that is white walls!!

Ok, before we get down to the nitty gritty of the details of the project…lets take a look at a few before/afters of the space.

But honestly, the white isn’t even my favorite part of the bathroom re-do. I am an accent wall type of person and so I knew I needed to do something a little extra!!

Are you ready for it?

black accent wall in bathroom

We went with a solid black wall behind the toilet! The toilet is in its own little nook in the bathroom but does not have a door on it. So we can see the black wall in the mirror and I’m kinda in love!

Sean was worried about the black, but not because of the color, just because painting a dark color next to a light (or white in our case) you can have paint that bleeds, or transfer if you don’t tape off the area.

Of course I told him he had nothing to fear because we would be using FrogTape® and they have their PaintBlock® Technology. That means that it reacts to the water in latex paint to instantly gel to form a micro-barrier that seals off the edges of the tape. This prevents bleeding and makes painting accent walls like this stress free!

Wall prep for painting

I spent the day on Friday prepping the bathroom for the paint. First I took everything off the walls including towel racks, blinds, and plug/switch covers. Next I scrubbed down all of the walls. Get all the dirt, grime and dust off of all edges.

Since we were painting the baseboards as well, the FrogTape® needed to be placed on the floor to avoid getting any paint on there. So we also swept and steam mopped the floor. That way the tape could create a solid seal without any dust or dirt getting in the way.

So we painted all of the walls and baseboards white, except the one behind the toilet. We did 3 coats on the walls and let it dry for 12 hours overnight before taping off the black accent wall.

For that wall, we tapped across the bottom baseboard, both touching walls and the ceiling as well.

Because we didn’t want to remove the toilet for the painting project, we also needed to make sure it was completely covered. So we used plastic to wrap behind the toilet tank and then held it in place with the FrogTape®.

You guys, the lines on this black wall are amazing. Seriously, I was giddy as I pulled back the tape!

I am so excited about this wall and the way it turned out.

Are you in love with the black accent wall combined with the white ones? I can’t get over it and I’m so excited to change up all of the decor in the room as well. Stay turned for that, once I get a second to go shopping for it all! All I’ve had time to get was a new shower curtain, but even that is AMAZING!!

I’ve loved using FrogTape® for other accent walls as well. Check out this bright yellow wall I did in our dinning room a few years ago.
