At the beginning of Summer, we started to get out of our normal routine and one of the things that we didn’t get to everyday was our daily reading. We had so much to do each day and was one of the things that was easy to say “we’ll just do it tomorrow”, or the kids would say “can’t I do something else instead”. So after a bit of skipping, we decided that we would make a fun chart where the kids could visually see their progress and get excited about their daily reading again.

We created this Bookworm reading chart, and it’s been so fun to watch the kids’ worms grow all Summer long! The best part is that they have both made a goal to keep the worm growing after school starts and they want to make it go all the way around the wall!

Kellogg's Products from Sam's Club

Another thing that we found is a great incentive for reading is new books. We visit the library often, but sometimes having your own book is so much better! We went to Sam’s Club and bought a bunch of specially marked Kellogg’s products (Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, Pop Tarts and Rice Krispies Treats) that are going to be perfect for our Back To School schedules. They will make breakfast, lunches and after school snacks SO much easier! All of the products we purchased get us a new book for the kids, and also a new book for a local school!! Products must be purchased now thru 9/30/16, while supplies last! Over 80 full-length Scholastic titles to choose from for beginning readers to teens! Each local Sam’s Club is partnered with a local school and makes a donation to that school.

Redeem your free books in 3 easy steps! 1. Buy any participating Kellogg’s or The J.M. Smucker Company product by 9/30/2016 2. Upload your receipt at FreeBookOffer.com/Samswithin 30 days of purchase. 3. Redeem for your free Scholastic book and one book will be donated to a local classroom as well!

I can’t wait for my kids to get their new books from Scholastic and continue their bookworms!!

Wanna make your own book worm? I know it’s a simple project but it’s also a fun one. You can even get the kids involved in making them.

We just used a bunch of colored cardstock paper and a 2 inch circle punch for this project.

They will get excited to add another circle to the worm and watch it grow.We cut out a BUNCH of circles, and on the back of them wrote 20 minutes because that was what we agreed would be the time frame for each circle. So whenever the kids read for 20 minutes, they get to put up another circle.

We decided that because the majority of their reading is done in their rooms, we would put their bookworms on the wall in their room. You could also create a family bookworm and put it up in a more common area as well!

What do you do to keep your little ones excited about reading both during the Summer as well as during Back To School time?
