One of my favorite parts of having my own office in my house is that almost daily I have my little ones coming in and asking if they can help. Although a lot of what I do can’t be done by a 4 and 5 year old, we are quick to come up with some sort of solution. Whether it’s working on homework by my side, or creating some new artistic masterpiece to be hung in the dining room for all to gawk over, they love to be creating and working side by side with me.

So when we redid my office/craft room (more on that coming soon!) I knew that I wanted to create a work space just for them when they come and want to hang out in the office with me. I wanted to create a spot where they can do their wonderful art projects, homework in the afternoons or just pull out the tablet and play a game in the same room as me….but I wanted them to have their OWN SPACE.

I refinished an old school desk and I’m absolutely in love with how it turned out. Maybe the best $6 ever spent at our local thrift store! We already had a shoe organizer hanging on the wall from when I did the homeschooling thing during preschool, and it’s full of a TON of preschool packs from Over The Big Moon that always keep the kids busy and entertained. So I figured I would put the desk right by this so it was easily accessible while they are sitting at their new desk.

With both of them learning things like days of the week recently, i thought it would be fun to use a $1 pack above the desk that has a Today Is, Yesterday Was and Tomorrow Will Be spot for them to fill in the blank.

I also tried to stock their station with anything/everything they will need. So we headed to Walmart and threw a million things into the cart; scissors for each kid, pens, pencils and dry erase markers, LOTS OF Scotch® Brand TAPE (so much cleaner than glue, am i right?!) crayons galore and inside the desk we have colored paper, notebooks, tracing papers and a plastic sleeve for them to go inside.

The kids have already had so much fun in their new space. The other day I walked in and had to take a picture of William as he was taping paper upon paper upon paper….

I love watching their imagination, even when it is just a bunch of paper. He was so proud of this creation and showed everyone that came over that day!!!

I can’t wait to have this spot for them to do their homework, and we even have William’s daily task lists on Post-it® notes across the top of their desk (I love printing on Post-it® notes!) so he can always stay on task and know what needs to be done each day when he gets home from school.

Make sure you head to Walmart’s stationary section (or seasonal) to pick up all of the fabulous supplies you’ll need to create a homework/craft area for your kids.

  18. Haha, I love this! My daughter told me just yesterday she was going to spend the day working just like me. I told her that her work was school work, so she sat down with her toy computer, an iPad, several books, a notebook and pens, coloring books, etc and she did spend quite a bit of the day hanging out with me while we both worked. She even wrote a book. It was pretty awesome.

  19. Thanks for sharing at the #HomeMattersParty – we love partying with you! Hope to see you next Friday. 🙂
