 super hero birthday party

We got to throw William his first friend bday party this year. Ya see, normally all his friends are out of town because his birthday falls right around Labor Day (his bday is Sept 1) but this year his best friend was going to be in town so we decided to go for it and throw him a fabulous party. He got so excited to have a party all for himself, and I think that mom actually delivered. The kids had a BLAST and even though it was a super hero party, which is normally for boys, the girls had tons of fun too. With the release of Captain America 2 last week, I am sure that tons more people will be having a party with the same general theme, so you ready for all the details?

OH, and don’t worry, I’ve got a ton of free printables for you to use. pretty much everything you see in these photos are available to download at the bottom of the post.

Once the kids saw food, they couldn’t keep their hands to themselves. So our party started out with all the kids helping themselves to lunch. We served Wonder Dogs, Kryponite Jello, Fire Blasts and Ka-Pow Krackers (Walmart currently has Marvel shaped crackers that were PERFECT). To drink I wrapped juice boxes with the cute hero themed wrappers, and had a few wrapped around water for the adults.

Once everyone was done eating, it was time to become super heroes. I used a really strong tape to create handles on paper places by using one long strip and one half the size. place the two sticky sides together in the center of the long strand. then with the adhesive parts that are still showing, attach the handle to the top side of the paper place. The kids then decorated the bottom of the plate to become their shield.

I also created 10 minute super hero capes using this tutorial from A Mommys Life with a Touch of Yellow. Then it was time for everyone to come up with their official super hero name and powers. It was fun to hear all of the things that the kids wanted. Everything from turning bad guys into balls, to covering them in glitter! Their imaginations were at work, and each kid got an official certificate (included in the free download) with their name and powers on it.

Each of the kids went home with their superhero certificate, a vial of M&M’s. Each kid came up with different powers that the colors had. If you ate a green one, you turned into a frog. Orange made you spit fire, Brown make you freeze until someone gave you a yellow! They also each got these fun hand tattoos that I found at Walmart. They had a whole section of Marvel dollar items up by the checkout lines. It was fun to collect the items for the party.

Before having cake, the kids got to have their hand at breaking open the pinata. They couldn’t get it open. We probably took turns and hit for 15 minutes before they finally had candy falling out!

The party ended with the best part – CAKE AND CUPCAKES!!

Will really wanted hulk cupcakes, and I think that these ones fit the bill. I just made regular white cucpakes and put in green food coloring. For the frosting, on both the cake and the cupcakes I just went to the bakery section of the store and asked to buy some buttercream frosting by the lb. I used about 2 1/2 lbs for all the cupcakes and cake! I dyed the frosting green for the cupcakes and topped them with the fun saying toppers (free in the download below)

The cake is probably my favorite part of the whole party. I made 2 nine inch round cakes out of funfetti cake mix, and put a little frosting in between to hold them together. Then I froze it for about 2 hours before frosting the whole thing; this keeps the cake from flaking.

I love how the shield turned out using M&Ms to create the Captain America symbol. I tried really hard to create the star our of the blue ones, but struggled! LOL so I just filled it all in and cut out a white star and taped it on the top.

We also had a photo booth with random props for the kids. They were so cute getting their pictures taken. Here’s a few of my favorites.

And the joy on his face while opening up the simplest of gifts makes me so happy. I loved how much he enjoyed the party and that he could have so much fun.
