The other day we sat down to decorate gingerbread houses as a family. It was a great way to get rid of the remainder of our Halloween candy. But we didn’t have anything to use on top of the house, so Sean asked me to get him some gum to use. Luckily while at Walmart they had a Extra Gum demo, with coupon set up by the dairy section.

Our gingerbread houses turned out….interesting! lol. Sean’s was good everyone else just kinda played in the frosting and ate the candy!! But after I got looking at all the leftover gum and couldn’t just throw away all the pretty silver goodness. Is that weird of me? Or probably just the crafter in me!! I thought that they would make a perfect pendant banner for the rag wreath I was making. It added a perfect touch to the display, and I love how it looked on the cookies & milk table, at our Relief Society Christmas dinner that it was displayed at. I’m just sad that I didn’t get a picture of it that night.

But now it is hanging in out house, and it’s beautiful. It is perfect for the holidays, but I am also excited to transition it to a winter wreath/banner! double duty is my favorite!

For the gum wrapper banner I just folded the wrapper in half hamburger style and then in half hot dog. Then cut from the outside corner down to the fold. This creates the triangle. And if you get lazy like me, do 2-3 at a time!! Then just put an adhesive in between the two points, and attach it onto the twine.

I also made a felt ball garland just by using a needle and thread; poke the needle thru the middle of the felt and slide onto the thread. They will hold in place fairly well. Then just one simple strand of green bakers twine adds a little extra color.

  5. Clever idea! We used the gum as shingles on our gingerbread house too and it didn’t look as pretty as some of the other’s I’ve seen, lol. Fun memories none the less 😉 I’m a random object for crafts hoarder too, I may need help. I just went through some bins this week and starting tossing. I actually had a hard time doing that, lol.
