We decided to make homemade ice cream in our mason jars…and the kids had so much fun. Although they didn’t shake them all themselves…it was more fun for a minute until their little arms got tired, and then Mom and Dad ended up shaking the rest. Oh well, they enjoyed it for a minute!!

Homemade Ice Cream in a Jar

  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • Ice
  • Salt
  • Ziplock Bag
  • Mason Jar

Combine whipping cream, sugar and vanilla in a ziplock bag. Place inside the mason jar and then fill to the brim with ice. Then sprinkle the top with salt (this helps with lowering the temperature of the ice, to make the ice cream freeze!). Put the lid on the jar, and shake….shake, shake, shake! This will take about 5-10 minutes of shaking to freeze your icecream.

We topped our ice cream with all sorts of stuff. Because everyone likes different toppings, right?

Oh, and did you see the fun way we knew who’s was who’s? We used chalkboard vinyl  and cut it to the size of the lid, then wrote each of our name’s on them!! The kid’s loved that they had one with their own name on it!

  1. I remember we made ice cream in zip lock bags in 10th grade science. This looks way more fabulous haha

  2. OOH! I love the idea in a mason jar! We just made this recipe for fathers day, but we put the ice in a gallon size ziplock, It froze our hands off before we were able to enjoy the treat! Love the chalk names on top too!

  3. Love this Vanessa! How long did it take to freeze? Not only is ice cream delicious treat but now you can have fun making it too! <3 Heidi

    • Some took a bit longer than others. I’m sure it was because I didn’t measure the salt, just kinda put it in. Also, the amount of shaking can change it. But typically about 10 minutes per jar!

  4. My kids would love to do this! Putting it on my list of things to do this summer!

  5. totally adding this to the list of things to do with the naughty nieces while I have them! yay pinning

  6. What a great idea. I love homemade icecream and usually use my ice cream maker, but their is just something about shaking it up in a can – or jar. looks delicious!

  7. This looks super yummy!! I’m going to have to try it with the kids, thanks for sharing!

  8. How fun is this?!? Stopping by from your Guest Post on Busy Being Jennifer. 🙂

  9. Not sure what I did wrong…. the ice cream was a salty mess. The bag was sealed though. And I shook for over 10 minutes, but only a small portion of the cream seemed like ice cream. Weird. But I’ll have to try it again! The chalkboard names are so cute. 🙂

  10. I can’t wait to try this.I love ice cream!!!!!!!

  11. Science Teacher says

So adding rock salt to ice doesn’t lower the temperature of the ice. What it does is lower the melting point of the ice. When this happens, energy is released from the ice as it melts thus making really cold water.

  12. kay stevens says

    what size mason jar?

  13. Nancy Fysz says

Tried this with just the ingredients in the jar. No ice. Shook for 4-5 minutes. Can you over shake the cream? We are waiting for it to freeze.
